What is Needle Felting?
So, what is needle felting? Needle felting is a process of taking wool fibers and with the use of felting needles creating the wools into interlocked shapes. Felting needles are a special kind of needle that have tiny barbs on the end. The barbs are going in one direction and when the needle is stabbed into the wool the barbs pull the wool in, but not back out again causing the wool fibers to tangle and their scales to lock together and felt.
How is Needle Felting Done?
Needle felting is begun by rolling up a small amount of wool and stabbing it with the needle. When the wool is stabbed with the felting needle it pulls the wool into itself. By stabbing the wool with the needle over and over while turning the wool it continues to pull wool into itself and the wool, with its tiny scales, locks together. Continued stabbing and turning results in a firm round shape. Once there is a basic shape to start with wool is added where it is needed to form a sculpture and thus different shapes and forms.
Where can I do Needle Felting and how can I get started?
The process is something that could easily be done relaxing on a Sunday afternoon on your patio, while watching TV at night, or while sitting on a Teams meeting. It only requires basic tools, the needle, the wool, and a cushion or pad (to protect yourself from the needle if you go through the wool) making this a super portable and easy to start/stop craft.
